For my independent reading I have chosen to read "Becoming Steve Jobs" by Brent Schlender and Ric Tetzile. This book talks about all the life of Steve Jobs as a visionary, leader, cofounder and more. It starts at his interview with Brent, which wasn't very good because Jobs wasn't an easy man to interview, because mainly all the questions that were asked were about Jobs past and he wasn't a person that liked looking back, he always looked on what was next. Brent was a really patient reporter that was willing to find out more about Jobs as a man undergoing an evolution full of failures, flashes of insight, missteps, and luck. Jobs was a brilliant men who affected society in both good and bad, because kids, teenagers and adults may be using this technology as a way of learning, searching or studying but in most of the cases they use this technology for social media and that may cause some addiction. As some of you know, Jobs was the inventor of Apple but he was not the only one that helped on making this creation,Steve Wozniak also influenced a lot on this project. Jobs was simply a genius that always went beyond his knowledge, he really wanted to create something that the world had never seen. He also invented pixar and most of the Disney movies. This book really captures some of the best and worst moments of Jobs as a leader, he always wanted to stand out on everything and sometimes that lead him to a wrong path because in some cases he was really rude to people, thats why he was known for half jerk half genius. I really loved the way of writing of this book, because you feel like Steve Jobs was narrating this but then another person comes and starts telling you a memory. I love reading this book because it talked about the men that changed the world, it was amazing knowing all the life of Steve and all the obstacles that he had to face in order to be successful and create one of the bigger companies in the world. I also loved this book because there was many things that I didn't knew about Steve like: he always went to work with the same clothes and with no shoes, he was like a buddha and that he worked for a long time in his house to create Apple. I really recommend this book to all of the people that want to read and are willing to know more about Jobs and all of Steve's journey through the making of Apple and the extraordinary men he was.
Fist of all, this critique is about a sci-fi story called the veldt by Ray Bradbury and it is about George and Lydia Hadley that are parents of Peter and Wendy, their parents spoiled them with the best technology they can offer. The house was completely computerize, meaning that it was capable to do all the chores. Perhaps the most outstanding aspect of the house was the nursery because it was controlled by the kids imagination, so their thoughts were projected in the nursery.
One of the main themes of the story was imagination, because as I told you before the kids imagination was able to control the whole nursery, and the last theme that I think really fit in was violence because the parents were killed by the lions and it was partially the kids fault because they were thinking of their parents so everything that they imagined it was projected in the nursery. This short story has a lot of sci-fi elements but I'm only going to talk about two main ones that are the future dystopia and technology advancements. A quotation that could really support my first element of sci-fi " Future Dystopia" is when the author gives a brief introduction "George and Lydia are parents of Peter and Wendy. They spare no expense at providing their children with the best that technology can offer and their house is completely computerized. This is really relevant to sic-fi because it captures almost every important element in science fiction because the house is like a mother, father, and a nursemaid, if the parents died the kids wouldn't even notices. The second element is "Technology Advancements", a quotation that could really support it is when the autor says that "The house had machines that could do all the chores like, fry eggs, generate food, bath the kids, sweep the house and much more. This is relevant to science fiction because this house can do things bi itself so that is considered a sci-fi element, also it is capable to do all the chores and all the needs. Know I'm going to talk about the narrative techniques that are used in this story. The first one is imagery and it is used when the author starts describing the nursery "The nursery was silent. It was empty as a jungle glade at hot high noon. The walls were blank and two dimensional. The walls began to purr and recede into crystalline distance, it seemed, and presently an Africa veldt appeared, in three dimensions. The goal of imagery is to make visuals for the readers, and in the example it clearly shows what the characters were thinking. The second and last narrative technique is foreshadowing, the quotation that could really support it is "what is that? she asked. "An old wallet of mine" he said. He sowed it to her. The smell of a lion. There were drops of salive on it, it had been chewed, and there were blood smears on both sides. Ray Bradbury was trying to give the reader a clue of what was going to happen in there future, and that is the point of foreshadowing. In conclusion, this story gives us a really important message that is that technology is really helpful for somethings but it can never replace the unconditional love between the family. At first, I was shocked because I didn't expect that the parents died and that the kids in some way killed their parents. This is a really important lesson that is that what you love most is what hurts you the most. I preferred the book version of this story, because: the movie is very exaggerated like in the begging of the movie they were introducing the Capulets and the Montegues and it looked like a typical Mexican story, because of all the guns, the way of dressing and all the drama they put in the characters. And in the book it looked more serious because they focused more on the two crossed lovers and the family feud. Also, the movie didn't describe a lot the pure love Romeo and Juliet had, they focused more on minor details that were the guns, the clothes and the physical appearance. In conclusion, as you have seen I like the book better than the movie because the movie misses a lot of important elements that the book has.
The main conflict of Enrique's Journey is that Lourdes her mother needs to make more money for her children, so she goes to the USA so that her children's have everything they need.
Enrique waits for her every single day, but she doesn't come back, although she is doing well she doesn't make enough money for her children. When she starts talking with this great guy they automatically fall in love, he starts helping her on her economic situation but he turns out to be the worst men because he leaves her pregnant and he doesnt respond for the baby. Over the time Enrique starts giving up on her moms return, and he starts doing drugs, and being a bad student, but he has decide that she can't dump him like a trash, so he starts his journey to the USA. I really like this book because it has a beautiful message that is; be greateful for what you have and love the ones that love you because they are always doing the best for you. And the second I started this book I was like wow! how is it possible that this kids have the courage to go and find their moms, knowing the possibilities of death and of never coming back. But actually theres still kids from other parts of the world searching for their moms. Have you ever wonder about your favorite memories in the past years? But you never wrote them? Well, in this case I will share a couple of my favorite memories of 2014 that include all the
good memories that I have lived with my fiends and family. In all 2014 I have had a lot of memories but the ones that have really impacted my life are the ones that I learn something from it like the ones that I'm about to tell you. According to the paragraph above, one of my favorite memories of 2014 was when my dad came to visit me in October and it was one of the best moments ever because he was really sick and I felt really bad because I couldn't be with him and take care of him so I was so happy to see that I would be with him a couple of months. Another awesome memory that I had was Gorgona's trip; It was amazing because I got to do a lot of cool things like interacting with nature, having fun with my classmates and seeing cool species in their natural habitat. The last awesome memory that I had was another trip but to Rio Claro with my class. It was a lot of fun too because I got to do so many things like canopy, entering a cave, and lots of more things. Both trips were amazing and I got to do so many fun things that were really interesting and fun to learn. Lastly, this has really impacted my life because when I remember all the memories. Every single time this three memories that I have shared with you, they always pop up in my brain and I remember every single detail of them and they are just so special to me because I have learned from all three memories a very good lesson that is "live every day to the fullest" because life is so short and you don't know what is going to happen the next day or if you will live it again. So not only this lesson has a very good message but it has an amazing impact in my life. lots of more things that I'm about to explain. As we have seen, a normal dogs day will be to get up drink some water, bark at people or other dogs, then eat, do their needs, play with the owner and sleep. But although they don't express their feelings or their way of thinking we could see what their trying to say because of their way of staring at us, or their way of barking toward us or many other ways that only dogs will understand. But we could never understand exactly what they want or what they feel because they communicate in a different language than we do. As a result, I could never act like a dog or trying to fell like a dog because I don't know exactly what they are trying to say or what their feelings are about their owners, about humans or life. Sometimes my dog is barking to another dog, people or even nothing; and my response is always "Lola stop barking" for me is really annoying because she is barking for no reason or just because a dog is walking or a human is running, but for her it could be a way of communicating or trying to protect her owner or even trying to protect her territory. In conclusion, I could never act like a dog or trying to fell like a dog because dogs have different ways of communicating towards people. And even if I try really hard I could never achieve it because they are absolutely smart, they know what is going to happen, they hear from long distance and the best part is that they are the most loyal living thing I know. |
